Operations Manager

Joel never imagined his professional path would lead to managing a dental clinic. He studied Cognitive Science and set his sights on a career in mental health and addictions counselling. Over the years, he also built a versatile skill set through various leadership development and entrepreneurship programs - as well as hands-on experience in tree-planting, wildland firefighting, landscaping, construction, and customer support for a software company.



When the opportunity arose for Dr. Maiya to establish her practice in South River, the pair decided to embark on this incredible adventure together. As the Operations Manager, Joel is excited to support the staff, the patients, and the wider Almaguin community as they plant deep roots in the north.


While Joel is learning a tremendous amount about the dental world every day, he does his best (often "behind the scenes") to keep the practice running smoothly. On any given day, you can find him in the back office on the computer or tackling minor repairs and facility upgrades around the clinic.

Joel is passionate about community development, personal growth, and leadership. His approach is guided entirely by his personal mission statement: “know the potential within myself and strive for it; see the potential in other people and help them achieve it; dream of the potential for the world and make it a reality.”


Leveraging his background, Joel offers complimentary, informal support to the community in two areas:


  • Dental Anxiety: He is always happy to sit down and listen to anyone experiencing anxiety before their visit to help ensure a comfortable experience. If you would like to connect, please let the admin team know at least a week before your appointment.
  • CDCP Navigation: Whether or not you are (or intend to be) a patient here, Joel also provides hands-on assistance to help individuals navigate and apply for the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP). 


Outside the office, Joel loves spending time introspectively. Particularly, surrounded by nature, and especially in the mountains or on the water. While he is naturally quiet and often tucked away in the back office, he truly loves connecting with people. Please don't hesitate to ask if he’s around when you come visit!
